Episode 428: I Wanna Be An Archie - Gisele Lagace interview
Thursday Oct 06, 2016
Thursday Oct 06, 2016
Earlier this year, our favorite comic book artist Gisele Lagace told us about her upcoming project involving ARCHIE and his gang entering the wonderful world of the RAMONES, simply titled "Archie Meets Ramones". Of course being Ramones marks but more importantly respecting the legacy and giving us an excuse to talk about them, we got Gisele back on the horn. We discussed how the project came to be, the research involved, Dee Dee Ramone being a hottie, and why it's important to draw guitars accurately. In our News, Views and Tunes, we use this special Spotlight episode to welcome our good bud Aaron (from the Signal To Noise podcast) to officially join the RAM Fam. We discuss our fave everythings about the band and trade special memories involving Joey and the boys. Aaron also shares a very special story about playing a gig a few weeks after Joey passed away. Episode 419: Album Autopsy - Destruction’s Sentence of Death EP
Thursday Jul 28, 2016
Thursday Jul 28, 2016
In the early 80s, a new underground genre of aggressive heavy metal was being carefully crafted by the angry youth. Most fans believe that it was mainly happening in the USA but unbeknownst to them, the same thing was happening in Germany. Hailing from a small town on the Swiss/German border, DESTRUCTION was honing their craft and knocking on doors of record labels. Joining us in this Album Autopsy, metal legend Schmier reminisces about the early days of the band. We learn how the band was formed and what led to the release of the debut EP, Sentence of Death. He also shares stories about rehearsing in a wine cellar, a long train ride to Hanover where they were arrested upon arrival, the real reason why Steamhammer wanted to sign them, and working in the studio with a producer who couldn’t make heads or tails about their sound. And because of our Canadian roots, we also talk about Banzai Records and the World War III Festival in Montreal, where one band member got lost and Destruction almost had to cancel their show. Episode 417: Welcome to Black Metal - Venom Inc interview
Thursday Jul 14, 2016
Thursday Jul 14, 2016
Let the joyous celebrations of Hell begin!! Straight up... if VENOM never existed, then there would be no RAM. The legendary black metal trailblazers are a game changing outfit. They not only inspired a generation of extreme metallers but are probably leaving a positive impression on a second as well. But now Satan's favorite trio has split into two factions, as have a number of other bands over the years. Original vocalist/bassist Cronos is waving the Venom banner. But axeman Mantas and skin pounder Abaddon have staked their claim as VENOM INC. They recently came through town and we scratched yet another 'bucket list' band off our interview agenda. Hanging out with Misters Mantas and Abaddon, we discussed the early days of Venom, why they're not a cover band, their classic sound, plans of a new album, and so much more. With Venom having such a big impact on us personally, we couldn't help but share our memories and our whys and wherefores on this band that ruined our teen years and beyond. In our News , Views, and Tunes, we crank some classic Venom, some new FOGHAT (!!), and NUCLEAR ASSAULT paying tribute to "Thee Black Metal Gods! V - E - N -O - f'n - M!!" Horns Up! Episode 415: Album Autopsy - Flotsam and Jetsam’s Doomsday for the Deceiver
Thursday Jun 30, 2016
Thursday Jun 30, 2016
Back in 1986, a lot of fantastic thrash was being released. It seemed like there was a never ending supply. One of the best releases that year was FLOTSAM AND JETSAM's Doomsday for the Deceiver. It's the only album to ever score 6K's on Kerrang Magazine's rating system. Thirty years later, it still holds up with the best of them. To celebrate this landmark anniversary, we invited guitarist Michael Gilbert and vocalist Eric AK to discuss the early days of the band, how they got signed to Metal Blade, and we go through every track in detail. We also talk about the album cover, the original concept, and the (lack of) touring for the album. As a bonus feature, we also talk to Bill Metoyer, the man who worked tirelessly to capture all the magic as the album's engineer. Horns Up and Flotz 'til death!! Episode 407: Unhallowed Ground - The Black Dahlia Murder interview
Thursday May 05, 2016
Thursday May 05, 2016
Another bucket list moment! One would think getting the mighty BLACK DAHLIA MURDER on a metal radio show wouldn't prove that difficult. Anyone following TBDM for more than two minutes knows they're down to earth, approachable dudes. But for one reason or another, we were always unable to nail these guys down long enough for a chat. Vox Trevor Strnad said "No prob, guys" and gave us the lowdown while in town doing the entire Unhallowed album. We discussed the early days of the band, the current state of the industry, and short time he left the band. Unlike the band's namesake, we got to the bottom of these Murders. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we exchange war stories on the live front, split hoodies, and winning Metal Alliance ducats. Finally, we introduce Brit bashers LIVING MONSTROSITY in our Indie Spotlight. Horns!! Episode 400: The Big Four Oh! Oh! - Doro and Madame Mayhem interview
Thursday Mar 10, 2016
Thursday Mar 10, 2016
For all of us, hitting the Big 4-0 is a milestone. Some people pessimistically see it as the beginning of the end. But for the Heavy Metal internet radio world, the Big 4-0-0 is an equivalent milestone but we see no end in sight. The best way to truly celebrate this awesome occasion is with the best ever Creature Feature! The Mighty Mistress of Metal DORO PESCH is a true legend. Our history with Doro goes back to the very first WARLOCK record. We're absolutely thrilled to bring this exclusive chat with the Metal Goddess. She was truly excited to help us celebrate this milestone episode. We discussed her role as an ambassador of Metal, why she accepted AMON AMARTH's invitation, how much longer she wants to rock the masses, and how she first met Lemmy. In our News, Views and Tunes, we acknowledge one of our comrades winning an Oscar, we do some Kanye bashing, we learn about the expression "fuckin the dog". Musically, we crank some Doro, KREATOR, and SOLANUM. We also take some time to introduce and interview MADAME MAYHEM in our Indie Spotlight. Horns Up... 400 times! Thursday Feb 04, 2016
Thursday Feb 04, 2016
It's right there in the name: We love METAL! But we also have many other interests, so longtime listeners know that we're also geeks. We recently befriended cartoonist GISELE LAGACE and after chatting with her online about all sorts of stuff, we found out that she had a rock music career in the early 90s. We invited her to talk about her old band BARBARELLA and her current career as a premiere cartoonist. Fans of her online strip Menage a 3 will discover new things about Gisele, and our listeners will discover a band that they probably missed out on. We also talk about having similar life experiences, visiting the old Rock En Stock store in Montreal, the metal legends she befriended back in the day, her work for Archie Comics, and an upcoming project that everyone will love (Hey! Ho! Let's go!). In the music department, we play some Barbarella, FASTER PUSSYCAT, and KISS. Horns Up! In the second part of this Album Autopsy about METAL CHURCH's The Dark, former MC guitarist Craig Wells joins us again to discuss every track. We get into a few of the technical aspects of recording the album, what makes a great guitar solo, and one of his major regrets about his time in the band. He also tells us about David Wayne's no-nonsense sensibilities, how underrated Kirk Arrington really is, the album cover by legendary artist Don Brautigan, and we finish with some METALLICA touring stories in late 1986. Thursday Nov 12, 2015
Thursday Nov 12, 2015
When metal was on it's meteoric rise in popularity in 1986, METAL CHURCH released their album The Dark. Peaking at #92 on Billboard, it was a classic and influential album in the making. So we reached out to former MC guitarist Craig Wells who was more than happy to share stories about those days. In Part 1 of this Album Autopsy, Scott from Focus On Metal joins Roch and Craig for an educational conversation. We learn about the writing of the album in his grandmother's garage, the best way to record a demo, what happened to MC's deal with Elektra Records, and working with producer Terry Date. Horns up! Vocalist and bassist Jeff Becerra and legendary producer Randy Burns join us again for the occasion. We discuss every track and their lyrics, as Jeff finally spills the beans about the satanic message at the beginning of "Burning In Hell". Randy tells us about some of the recording and engineering tricks and techniques he used, we talk about the original (rejected) album cover, the creation of the iconic band logo, and we finish with some stories from the legendary World War III Festival in Montreal.
