Episode 380: Album Autopsy - Possessed's Seven Churches 30th Anniversary - Part 1
Thursday Oct 15, 2015
Thursday Oct 15, 2015
We love anniversaries... especially BIG ones! October 16th 2015 marks the 30th Anniversary of POSSESSED's Seven Churches album. This date also marks the official start of a little sub-genre called Death Metal. At first, it was only the name of a song but today, it's an industry. To celebrate this monumental release, we give you a new Album Autopsy and invite two of the architects of this album: vocalist and bassist Jeff Becerra of Possessed and legendary producer Randy Burns! In this first part, we discuss the song writing process, how Jeff pioneered a whole new style of vocal delivery, their relationship with Chuck Schuldiner, their lyrical content, how they wound up on Combat Records, and working in the studio with Randy. If you are a true fan of Death Metal, you must listen to this episode! Horns Up! Episode 366: Album Autopsy - Dangerous Toys' Self-Titled Part 1
Thursday Jun 18, 2015
Thursday Jun 18, 2015
As the 80s were coming to a close, many amazing chart-topping albums were released that we still enjoy today. One album is the self-titled debut by DANGEROUS TOYS. Released in May 1989 and fueled by a couple of great promo videos and singles, the album reached #65 on the Billboard Charts and achieved Gold status. In Part 1 of this Album Autopsy, vocalist Jason McMaster and guitarist Scott Dalhover join us for an in-depth exclusive look at this masterpiece. We learn how the band was formed, how they wrote the songs, how they got their record deal at SXSW when it was just a local festival, recording at the legendary Sound City Studios with Max Norman, who was in the studio next to theirs, how four young Texans adjusted to living in California for a few months, and much much more! This is the most in-depth Album Autopsy we've done so far! Episode 362: Album Autopsy - Slaughter's Stick It To Ya 25th Anniversary
Thursday May 14, 2015
Thursday May 14, 2015
Twenty-five years ago, one of hard rock’s most exciting albums was released to great fanfare. Selling over 2 million copies, SLAUGHTER's Stick It To Ya was loaded with hits, scoring three songs in the Top 40. We invited Mark Slaughter himself to help us celebrate its silver anniversary by answering all our fanboy questions in this exclusive Album Autopsy episode. He tells us all about the formation of the band, how they got their recording contract, how the album name was selected, and he shares the story of why "Fly To The Angels" was written. One of the coolest stories he shares is about the car he owned at the time... a true piece of Rock N' Roll history. And if that wasn’t enough, we ask him a question he has NEVER been asked before in 25 years! While we're at it, we also dive into the current happenings with Slaughter and talk about the release of his very first solo album "Reflections In A Rear View Mirror". Horns Up! Episode 357: Album Autopsy: Raven's All For One - John Gallagher interview
Thursday Apr 09, 2015
Thursday Apr 09, 2015
Our interest in NWOBHM originals RAVEN goes as far back as our interest in Heavy Metal itself. All For One is the English power trio's all important third album, which firmly put the band on the map and first got our attention as well. So this record is a prime candidate for inclusion in our ongoing Album Autopsy series. We tested vocalist/bassist/co-founder John Gallagher's memory as we dissected this album track-by-track, giving us the whys and wherefores of each piece of metallic gold. Having waited thirty years to get Mr. Gallagher on the horn, we weren't going to let him get away without sharing some stories from Raven's illustrious history. We were particularly wowed by the origin of original drummer Rob "Wacko" Hunter's unique stage wear, playing for the Hell's Angels, and taking a very young METALLICA out on their first tour. Episode 354: Album Autopsy: Crowbar's Self-Titled - Kirk Windstein interview
Thursday Mar 19, 2015
Thursday Mar 19, 2015
One never really needs a reason to speak with a Metal Legend like CROWBAR's Kirk Windstein. He's one of the true gentlemen of Metaldom and his feet are planted firmly on the ground. With our Album Autopsy series in full swing, having Mr. Windstein back on the show was a no brainer: we chose the band's sophomore release, their self-titled album to dissect. We tested Kirk's memory as we discussed the journey involving the creation of this classic, as well as examining each track in detail. He shared with us stories of how he writes music, working with producer Phil Anselmo, and how much of an influence Peter Steele was. In our abbreviated News, Views, and Tunes, we yack about hanging with DEICIDE's Glen Benton and supporting our local hardcore scene. Horns Up!! We first stepped onto the mean streets of Metaldom some thirty years ago. One of our first discoveries that captured our attention was our fellow Canadian countrymen EXCITER. So when we started this Album Autopsy series, dissecting one of Exciter's early classic platters was a no-brainer. So in this second installment, we take a look at the band's 3rd release, Long Live The Loud. We are totally stoked that guitarist/founding member John Ricci dedicated an entire evening of his busy schedule to give us a complete rundown about the creation of this classic album. Mr. Ricci shares stories about songwriting, working in the studio, playing through a guitar legend's amp and he also gives us tons of minutiae in a track-by-track rundown. He shares a story about drinking with Lemmy in Montreal. The album may be 30 years old but the sentiment behind it is ageless. Long Live the Loud indeed! Horns Up! Episode 339: Album Autopsy - Trouble's Psalm 9 30th Anniversary
Thursday Dec 04, 2014
Thursday Dec 04, 2014
Today, we debut a new series: Album Autopsy! We take an influential and/or chart topping album and talk about every step it took to make it. Then we talk about every track, discussing lyrics, sounds, and everything that makes a song great. Our first subject is TROUBLE's genre-setting album Psalm 9. Released in 1984, this album has been influencing Doom Metal artists for 30 years. To help us celebrate this landmark album, we invited not one, not two, but three of it's main architects! Joining us for this once-in-a-lifetime discussion is vocalist Eric Wagner, drummer Jeff Olson, and producer Bill Metoyer! The guys tell us stories about writing the songs, car accidents, and hanging out with Scott Baio! This is truly a must listen for fans of Trouble and Doom Metal! But the past is not the only thing we discuss: Eric and Jeff tell us about the new album they just released on TeePee Records with their new band THE SKULL. And Bill tells us about one of his latest projects, producing D.R.I.'s first album in 20 years. In the Indie Spotlight, we introduce sludge/doomsters GALE from Phoenix, AZ. Episode 333: The L.A. Queen - Gina Zamparelli interview
Thursday Oct 16, 2014
Thursday Oct 16, 2014
The name Gina Zamparelli may not roll off the tip of the brains for most of our listeners. So allow us the honor of making the proper introductions: Ms. Zamparelli is a trailblazer, being the very first female promoter to put on a show of significance and is a major player in the L.A. rock scene. She basically put a lot of your fave California bands on the rock n' roll map. With her segment on the Inside Metal documentary still fresh in our minds, we had the good fortune to sit down with Gina and discuss a variety of topics including promoting her first concert, her involvement in the Inside Metal documentary, and convincing David Lee Roth to lend a helping hand in historic preservation. She also regaled us with a gaggle of cool stories which had us on the edge of our seats (like raw meat being thrown at W.A.S.P. concerts). Definitely a front runner for Interview Of The Year! In our News, Views, and Tunes, we welcome the return of some Fall time RAM traditions and get stoked for the new EXODUS record. Horns up!!! Support Inside Metal!
