Episode 457: Krull Island - Leaves’ Eyes interview
Friday May 19, 2017
Friday May 19, 2017
Symphonic metallers LEAVES' EYES could very much be considered Metal's answer to Beauty And The Beast. Alexander Krull played a major role in the early 90s during the Roadrunner-led era of death metal, while he was fronting the legendary ATROCITY. In an attempt to expand their musical horizons, the thrashers morphed into the very different Leaves' Eyes while keeping their much heavier alter ego active. Now armed with a new kickass EP and new(ish) vocalist in the operatic Elina Siirala, Mr Krull and Co have taken the show on the road. We caught up with the dynamic duo to discuss the current happenings in the Eyes camp, Miss Siirala's background, and some Atrocity. In our News, Views and Tunes, we go over some new and upcoming releases, talk some slut vomit, and say Happy Bday to the immortal Chuck Shuldiner. Musically we crank the new Leaves' Eyes, classic Atrocity, classic POSSESSED, AVULSED, VOMIT REMNANTS, UNGRAVED APPARITION, and THEATRE OF TRAGEDY. Horns Up!! Episode 456: Weeding Out The Weak - Weedeater interview
Friday May 12, 2017
Friday May 12, 2017
"It's 4/20, Dude!" (In our worst/best Jeff Spicoli). On April 20th, we couldn't think of a band we'd rather see in our hometown than the mighty WEEDEATER. The North Carolina metaller's stoner/doom stylings is the perfect soundtrack to celebrate "The Devil's Lettuce" in 2017. We dragged bass/vox Dixie Dave Collins away from the merch booth long enough to share some thoughts. We discuss the latest record Goliathan, their controversial monicker, and their fish-out-of-water story with Season of Mist. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we talk RAM on public transit, trade Metal festival war stories, and drinking D.R.I.'s beer!! Also, Aaron calls in from the Carolina Rebellion festival! Musically we crank the latest Weedeater, new GRUESOME, INTERNAL BLEEDING, CONNOISSEUR, and some classic EXODUS. Hours!! Friday May 05, 2017
Friday May 05, 2017
In Part 2 of this Album Autopsy, Mike Plant, Dan Hughes, and Rick Hughes join us again to talk about the songs on SWORD's debut, Metalized. We talk about the songwriting process, the record company putting in "special orders", and the inspiration behind the lyrics (Bikers, Aleister Crowley, drugs, and The Poltergeist, oh my!) We talk about gigs in Montreal at the Moustache Club, the selection of the album name, the promo videos, and touring. We especially discuss the short tour they did with METALLICA and METAL CHURCH around the Province of Québec in 1986. We also talk about good times in Sherbrooke at the old Hotel Wellington and at the Rock Palace club, where they brought up a Harley on the second floor of the venue! Horns Up!! Episode 454: Album Autopsy - Sword’s Metalized - Part 1
Friday Apr 28, 2017
Friday Apr 28, 2017
The Province of Québec has always been a hotbed for metal, but most notably the city of Montréal. Ask any international touring band and they will all say that it's one of their favorite places to play. With so many metalheads populating the fair province, it's a given that many kick ass bands would be formed and try to outperform each other. In the early 80s, a band from Saint-Bruno rose from its streets and conquered the Montréal metal scene. Plying their craft all around the province, SWORD created some of the most memorable tunes to ever to come out of Québec. In 1986, they released the classic album Metalized to great fanfare. In Part 1 of this Album Autopsy, Mike Plant, Dan Hughes, and Rick Hughes walk us through the early days of the band and their time in the studio in Toronto and Montréal. Québec's slogan should be changed to La Belle Province Métal! Horns Up!! Episode 452: Metalmania - Anvil interview
Friday Apr 14, 2017
Friday Apr 14, 2017
For us, the wonderful world of pro-wrestling is not just a guilty pleasure. We've never hidden our joy of the square circle on this show. When you look beyond the grunts and body slams, the similarities between pro-wrestling and our beloved genre get more and more apparent. Both have a tendency of catering to similar audiences and are generally maligned by society as a whole. The artists and wrestlers live similar lifestyles and face the same challenges. With Wrestlemania having recently passed through our backyard, we found ourselves in wrestling overload. We fiund this to be a good time to cover the mat world. We discuss the strong connection between Metal and wrestling and the how's and where's we discovered our beloved sport. As it turns out, Canadian metal legends ANVIL are also pro-wrestling "marks". Right before the Wrestlemania chaos, the boys made their way through town and gave us a moment of their time. So while the likes of MOTÖRHEAD have played a role in wrasslin' over the years, the Metal underground is full of tunes and characters dedicated to the craft. Musically, we crank new and classic Anvil, NASTY SAVAGE, ANTI SEEN, INCENDIARY, VEXTEMPER, EAT THE TURNBUCKLE (!) and the mighty PILEDRIVER (!!). And the winner is... everyone one that tunes in! Friday Mar 31, 2017
Friday Mar 31, 2017
Consider this week's show an extra special episode. This time 'round, we feature not one but two awesome ladies that are contributing to the Metal world in their own way. First up, Heavy Metal Relics is a cool new YouTube show that focuses on the "stuff" from Metal's past that we enjoy so much. Hostess Bridgett Englund showcases obscure vinyl, cassettes, And Ts. All pieces of Metals history and every piece has a story. We're also stoked to welcome back EDGE OF PARADISE vocalist Margarita Monet. Promoting the band's cool new EP Alive, we discuss all the big names who have produced and mixed it, her childhood, her musical background, playing live, and the prospect of touring soon. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we get real deep discussing ANVIL's dildo and F- holes! Musically we crank the new EOP, old school EXUMER, WAR ON WOMEN and JUDAS PRIEST!!! Horns!! Episode 445: Life on the Sharp Edge - Sword interview
Friday Feb 17, 2017
Friday Feb 17, 2017
We've always been one for the underdog. In terms of recognition, 80s Montreal metallers SWORD never quite got up there with some of their Canadian counterparts. But in our hearts and minds, they've always been up there with the best of 'em. Now on the comeback trail with a brand new live album, it's a good time to give Sword their deserved accolades. We caught up with guitarist Mike Plant to discuss the new live CD, how tight they were on stage, and partying with Lemmy in a private club in London. Roch also shares with Mike a moment he had with the band at a club gig in 1989. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we talk about drum styx (and other stuff) to the face, HMV Canada memories and the latest in the Lambesis saga. Musically, we crank some Sword, the new VENOM PRISON and GRINDMOTHER! Horns Up!! Episode 439: Ain’t No Funny Book - Jon Schnepp interview
Wednesday Dec 21, 2016
Wednesday Dec 21, 2016
Thrash legends SLAYER create the kind of art that can cross over into other avenues beyond the streets of Metaldom. Their controversial lyrics, imagery, and promo vids translate well to other media and the awesome Dark Horse Comics recognized that potential. Thus, "Slayer: Repentless" is born; a three part mini-series based on the promo vids of the namesake album. The man behind these pages of rage is no stranger to our beloved genre... Writer/Director Jon Schnepp was an artistic mastermind behind the Metalocalypse series, has directed videos for FORBIDDEN and EXODUS, and wrote the DETHKLOK comics. We can't think of a more qualified man for this unique venture. Mr. Schnepp discusses how he got involved on the series, how twisted the story will be, and his music of choice while working on this platter of splatter. He also discusses his time working on cartoons for Adult Swim, but especially his days on Metalocalypse. The Avengers? Spider-Who? SLAAAAAYEEEEEER!!!!! In our News, Views, and Tunes, we bitch about the 2016 Revolver Awards and address the ISIS/PayPal controversery. Musically, we crank some Slayer, CRADLE OF FILTH, Dethklok, the returning GORATORY, and introduce Swedish beaters ARROGANT STATE in our Indie Spotlight. Horns!! Episode 437: KISS My Witch - Jim Balent interview
Thursday Dec 08, 2016
Thursday Dec 08, 2016
We love it when our beloved worlds collide. Apart from being big dogs in the Heavy Metal yard, we also have a geeky side. We're always on the prowl for unique Creature Features that have a love of our beloved genre. Comic artist/writer/publisher JIM BALENT is best known for his work on Catwoman, Batman, but most of all, his self-published Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose series. He's also a huge KISS freak. It was a no-brainer to get him on the horn. We discussed his time working on Catwoman, why he launched his own pushing company, the 100th issue of his flagship title, working with Gene Simmons, and his massive KISS fandom. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we bash t-shirt wearing posers, crack open another Coreen's Bag O' Crap, and crank some KISS, ICED EARTH, and CARNIVAL IN COAL. Horns Up!! Episode 431: Episode of Horror - Carach Angren and Dan Parent interview
Thursday Oct 27, 2016
Thursday Oct 27, 2016
Greetings Boils and Ghouls! We couldn't think of a better way to follow up our 10th anniversary milestone than by diving right into the Halloween season. In the past, we've gone all out, dedicating the entire month to the metallically macabre. This year, we have a lot on our docket but we still want to get into the spirit of the season. With that in mind, Season of Mist black metallers CARACH ANGREN kick off our Halloween festivities. While terrorizing the town, keyboardist Ardek spooked us with scary tales about their latest record and "horror metal". As a bonus, we re-enter the world of Archie! Back in 2012, the gang had a Halloween crossover story with none other than the Kings Of The Night Time World themselves, KISS! We caught up with artist Dan Parent to get the back story on these back issues. We discuss how the project came about, the store signing he did with Gene and Paul, and his new Kickstarter project Die Kitty Die! Musically, we play some perilous passages straight out of the Necronomicon from BAPTISM, ICED EARTH, ERIMHA, and HENRY MANFREDINI. Horns for Halloween!
