Episode 415: Album Autopsy - Flotsam and Jetsam’s Doomsday for the Deceiver
Thursday Jun 30, 2016
Thursday Jun 30, 2016
Back in 1986, a lot of fantastic thrash was being released. It seemed like there was a never ending supply. One of the best releases that year was FLOTSAM AND JETSAM's Doomsday for the Deceiver. It's the only album to ever score 6K's on Kerrang Magazine's rating system. Thirty years later, it still holds up with the best of them. To celebrate this landmark anniversary, we invited guitarist Michael Gilbert and vocalist Eric AK to discuss the early days of the band, how they got signed to Metal Blade, and we go through every track in detail. We also talk about the album cover, the original concept, and the (lack of) touring for the album. As a bonus feature, we also talk to Bill Metoyer, the man who worked tirelessly to capture all the magic as the album's engineer. Horns Up and Flotz 'til death!! Episode 407: Unhallowed Ground - The Black Dahlia Murder interview
Thursday May 05, 2016
Thursday May 05, 2016
Another bucket list moment! One would think getting the mighty BLACK DAHLIA MURDER on a metal radio show wouldn't prove that difficult. Anyone following TBDM for more than two minutes knows they're down to earth, approachable dudes. But for one reason or another, we were always unable to nail these guys down long enough for a chat. Vox Trevor Strnad said "No prob, guys" and gave us the lowdown while in town doing the entire Unhallowed album. We discussed the early days of the band, the current state of the industry, and short time he left the band. Unlike the band's namesake, we got to the bottom of these Murders. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we exchange war stories on the live front, split hoodies, and winning Metal Alliance ducats. Finally, we introduce Brit bashers LIVING MONSTROSITY in our Indie Spotlight. Horns!! Episode 400: The Big Four Oh! Oh! - Doro and Madame Mayhem interview
Thursday Mar 10, 2016
Thursday Mar 10, 2016
For all of us, hitting the Big 4-0 is a milestone. Some people pessimistically see it as the beginning of the end. But for the Heavy Metal internet radio world, the Big 4-0-0 is an equivalent milestone but we see no end in sight. The best way to truly celebrate this awesome occasion is with the best ever Creature Feature! The Mighty Mistress of Metal DORO PESCH is a true legend. Our history with Doro goes back to the very first WARLOCK record. We're absolutely thrilled to bring this exclusive chat with the Metal Goddess. She was truly excited to help us celebrate this milestone episode. We discussed her role as an ambassador of Metal, why she accepted AMON AMARTH's invitation, how much longer she wants to rock the masses, and how she first met Lemmy. In our News, Views and Tunes, we acknowledge one of our comrades winning an Oscar, we do some Kanye bashing, we learn about the expression "fuckin the dog". Musically, we crank some Doro, KREATOR, and SOLANUM. We also take some time to introduce and interview MADAME MAYHEM in our Indie Spotlight. Horns Up... 400 times! Thursday Feb 04, 2016
Thursday Feb 04, 2016
It's right there in the name: We love METAL! But we also have many other interests, so longtime listeners know that we're also geeks. We recently befriended cartoonist GISELE LAGACE and after chatting with her online about all sorts of stuff, we found out that she had a rock music career in the early 90s. We invited her to talk about her old band BARBARELLA and her current career as a premiere cartoonist. Fans of her online strip Menage a 3 will discover new things about Gisele, and our listeners will discover a band that they probably missed out on. We also talk about having similar life experiences, visiting the old Rock En Stock store in Montreal, the metal legends she befriended back in the day, her work for Archie Comics, and an upcoming project that everyone will love (Hey! Ho! Let's go!). In the music department, we play some Barbarella, FASTER PUSSYCAT, and KISS. Horns Up! In the second part of this Album Autopsy about METAL CHURCH's The Dark, former MC guitarist Craig Wells joins us again to discuss every track. We get into a few of the technical aspects of recording the album, what makes a great guitar solo, and one of his major regrets about his time in the band. He also tells us about David Wayne's no-nonsense sensibilities, how underrated Kirk Arrington really is, the album cover by legendary artist Don Brautigan, and we finish with some METALLICA touring stories in late 1986. We love anniversaries... especially BIG ones! October 16th 2015 marks the 30th Anniversary of POSSESSED's Seven Churches album. This date also marks the official start of a little sub-genre called Death Metal. At first, it was only the name of a song but today, it's an industry. To celebrate this monumental release, we give you a new Album Autopsy and invite two of the architects of this album: vocalist and bassist Jeff Becerra of Possessed and legendary producer Randy Burns! In this first part, we discuss the song writing process, how Jeff pioneered a whole new style of vocal delivery, their relationship with Chuck Schuldiner, their lyrical content, how they wound up on Combat Records, and working in the studio with Randy. As the 80s were coming to a close, many amazing chart-topping albums were released that we still enjoy today. One album is the self-titled debut by DANGEROUS TOYS. Released in May 1989 and fueled by a couple of great promo videos and singles, the album reached #65 on the Billboard Charts and achieved Gold status. In Part 1 of this Album Autopsy, vocalist Jason McMaster and guitarist Scott Dalhover join us for an in-depth exclusive look at this masterpiece. We learn how the band was formed, how they wrote the songs, how they got their record deal at SXSW when it was just a local festival, recording at the legendary Sound City Studios with Max Norman, who was in the studio next to theirs, how four young Texans adjusted to living in California for a few months, and much much more! Episode 362: Album Autopsy - Slaughter's Stick It To Ya 25th Anniversary
Thursday May 14, 2015
Thursday May 14, 2015
Twenty-five years ago, one of hard rock’s most exciting albums was released to great fanfare. Selling over 2 million copies, SLAUGHTER's Stick It To Ya was loaded with hits, scoring three songs in the Top 40. We invited Mark Slaughter himself to help us celebrate its silver anniversary by answering all our fanboy questions in this exclusive Album Autopsy episode. He tells us all about the formation of the band, how they got their recording contract, how the album name was selected, and he shares the story of why "Fly To The Angels" was written. One of the coolest stories he shares is about the car he owned at the time... a true piece of Rock N' Roll history. And if that wasn’t enough, we ask him a question he has NEVER been asked before in 25 years! While we're at it, we also dive into the current happenings with Slaughter and talk about the release of his very first solo album "Reflections In A Rear View Mirror". Horns Up!
