The Province of Québec has always been a hotbed for metal, but most notably the city of Montréal. Ask any international touring band and they will all say that it's one of their favorite places to play. With so many metalheads populating the fair province, it's a given that many kick ass bands would be formed and try to outperform each other. In the early 80s, a band from Saint-Bruno rose from its streets and conquered the Montréal metal scene. Plying their craft all around the province, SWORD created some of the most memorable tunes to ever to come out of Québec. In 1986, they released the classic album Metalized to great fanfare. In Part 1 of this Album Autopsy, Mike Plant, Dan Hughes, and Rick Hughes walk us through the early days of the band and their time in the studio in Toronto and Montréal. For us, the wonderful world of pro-wrestling is not just a guilty pleasure. We've never hidden our joy of the square circle on this show. When you look beyond the grunts and body slams, the similarities between pro-wrestling and our beloved genre get more and more apparent. Both have a tendency of catering to similar audiences and are generally maligned by society as a whole. The artists and wrestlers live similar lifestyles and face the same challenges. With Wrestlemania having recently passed through our backyard, we found ourselves in wrestling overload. We fiund this to be a good time to cover the mat world. We discuss the strong connection between Metal and wrestling and the how's and where's we discovered our beloved sport. As it turns out, Canadian metal legends ANVIL are also pro-wrestling "marks". Right before the Wrestlemania chaos, the boys made their way through town and gave us a moment of their time. So while the likes of MOTÖRHEAD have played a role in wrasslin' over the years, the Metal underground is full of tunes and characters dedicated to the craft. We've always been one for the underdog. In terms of recognition, 80s Montreal metallers SWORD never quite got up there with some of their Canadian counterparts. Thrash legends SLAYER create the kind of art that can cross over into other avenues beyond the streets of Metaldom. Their controversial lyrics, imagery, and promo vids translate well to other media and the awesome Dark Horse Comics recognized that potential. Thus, "Slayer: Repentless" is born; a three part mini-series based on the promo vids of the namesake album. The man behind these pages of rage is no stranger to our beloved genre... Writer/Director Jon Schnepp was an artistic mastermind behind the Metalocalypse series, has directed videos for FORBIDDEN and EXODUS, and wrote the DETHKLOK comics. We can't think of a more qualified man for this unique venture. Mr. Schnepp discusses how he got involved on the series, how twisted the story will be, and his music of choice while working on this platter of splatter. Earlier this year, our favorite comic book artist Gisele Lagace told us about her upcoming project involving ARCHIE and his gang entering the wonderful world of the RAMONES, simply titled "Archie Meets Ramones". Of course being Ramones marks but more importantly respecting the legacy and giving us an excuse to talk about them, we got Gisele back on the horn. We discussed how the project came to be, the research involved, Dee Dee Ramone being a hottie, and why it's important to draw guitars accurately. In the early 80s, a new underground genre of aggressive heavy metal was being carefully crafted by the angry youth. Most fans believe that it was mainly happening in the USA but unbeknownst to them, the same thing was happening in Germany. Hailing from a small town on the Swiss/German border, DESTRUCTION was honing their craft and knocking on doors of record labels. Joining us in this Album Autopsy, metal legend Schmier reminisces about the early days of the band. We learn how the band was formed and what led to the release of the debut EP, Sentence of Death. He also shares stories about rehearsing in a wine cellar, a long train ride to Hanover where they were arrested upon arrival, the real reason why Steamhammer wanted to sign them, and working in the studio with a producer who couldn’t make heads or tails about their sound. And because of our Canadian roots, we also talk about Banzai Records and the World War III Festival in Montreal, where one band member got lost and Destruction almost had to cancel their show. Let the joyous celebrations of Hell begin!! Straight up... if VENOM never existed, then there would be no RAM. The legendary black metal trailblazers are a game changing outfit. They not only inspired a generation of extreme metallers but are probably leaving a positive impression on a second as well. But now Satan's favorite trio has split into two factions, as have a number of other bands over the years. Original vocalist/bassist Cronos is waving the Venom banner. But axeman Mantas and skin pounder Abaddon have staked their claim as VENOM INC. They recently came through town and we scratched yet another 'bucket list' band off our interview agenda. Hanging out with Misters Mantas and Abaddon, we discussed the early days of Venom, why they're not a cover band, their classic sound, plans of a new album, and so much more. With Venom having such a big impact on us personally, we couldn't help but share our memories and our whys and wherefores on this band that ruined our teen years and beyond.
