In Part 2 of this Album Autopsy, Mike Plant, Dan Hughes, and Rick Hughes join us again to talk about the songs on SWORD‘s debut, Metalized. We talk about the songwriting process, the record company putting in “special orders”, and the inspiration behind the lyrics (Bikers, Aleister Crowley, drugs, and The Poltergeist, oh my!) We talk about gigs in Montreal at the Moustache Club, the selection of the album name, the promo videos, and touring. We especially discuss the short tour they did with METALLICA and METAL CHURCH around the Province of Québec in 1986. We also talk about good times in Sherbrooke at the old Hotel Wellington and at the Rock Palace club, where they brought up a Harley on the second floor of the venue! Horns Up!!
The Province of Québec has always been a hotbed for metal, but most notably the city of Montréal. Ask any international touring band and they will all say that it’s one of their favorite places to play. With so many metalheads populating the fair province, it’s a given that many kick ass bands would be formed and try to outperform each other. In the early 80s, a band from Saint-Bruno rose from its streets and conquered the Montréal metal scene. Plying their craft all around the province, SWORD created some of the most memorable tunes to ever to come out of Québec. In 1986, they released the classic album Metalized to great fanfare. In Part 1 of this Album Autopsy, Mike Plant, Dan Hughes, and Rick Hughes walk us through the early days of the band and their time in the studio in Toronto and Montréal. Québec’s slogan should be changed to La Belle Province Métal! Horns Up!!
We’ve always been one for the underdog. In terms of recognition, 80s Montreal metallers SWORD never quite got up there with some of their Canadian counterparts. But in our hearts and minds, they’ve always been up there with the best of ’em. Now on the comeback trail with a brand new live album, it’s a good time to give Sword their deserved accolades. We caught up with guitarist Mike Plant to discuss the new live CD, how tight they were on stage, and partying with Lemmy in a private club in London. Roch also shares with Mike a moment he had with the band at a club gig in 1989. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we talk about drum styx (and other stuff) to the face, HMV Canada memories and the latest in the Lambesis saga. Musically, we crank some Sword, the new VENOM PRISON and GRINDMOTHER! Horns Up!!
We kick off our Creature Feature line up for 2017 with a dude that we, quite frankly, should have featured a long time ago. On numerous times, we’ve put over the mighty Hell’s Headbangers record label. The man simply known as Reaper has a major role within the HH headquarters. First off, as a contributing artist with his thrash band CRUCIFIED MORTALS, who just released their latest awesome album Psalms OfThe Dead Choir. Second, his Hellcast podcast does an excellent job promoting the label and its distribution artists. He’s also the guy that makes sure your HH order gets onto your stereo in record time. Mr. Reaper (or just Reap to his buddies) shares all this and also talks about his time in the mighty NUNSLAUGHTER as well as some memories of the late, great drummer Jim Konya. Normies better fear this reaper. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we pay up on our annual hockey bet with some Alter Bridge bashing. Musically, we crank the new Crucified Mortals, WEEKEND NACHOS, PRETTY MAIDS, and the critically underrated Canuck metallers SWORD. Finally we expose Chi-Town bashers ONE STEEL WOUND in our Indie Spotlight. Horns!!
