Before our interviews for 2017 start to kick in, we have the chance to kick back and just kick it. We had a plan going into today’s episode but once we pressed the record button, the fit hit the shan and we turned it into a free for all of topics and tunes. One topic being METALLICA having 5 out of 10 of this year’s top selling records lit a fire and various conversations involving gateway bands and what constitutes a ballad were discussed. Pinterest also raked us over the coals and we came to the conclusion that we have very different ideas of what “graphic” means. Finally we crank some EXUMER, DESASTER, SURGIKILL, some good CELTIC FROST, and some not so good Celtic Frost . Horns Up!!
The end of the year can be a slow period for the citizens of Metaldom. The new releases are in the books and the live scene slows down to celebrate the holidays with friends and family. We here at RAM have our own busy schedules as well, so this time of year, we usually find ourselves without a Creature Feature. But keep the faith, Beautiful MFers: we got a lot on our minds and a fistful of Metal to start 2017. We speak about the Kanye/TESTAMENT t-shirt fiasco, a local controversy on the CARNIFEX tour, and what’s to come with the new LIFE OF AGONY record. Oh, and a little GOGMAGOG talk??!! We laughed, we cried! Musically, we crank some faves from ’16 including SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, PROFANATICA, DESPISED ICON, SUPERJOINT, and some classics from DVC and SORTILÈGE! Horns!!
Heavy metal fans have the justified reputation for being the most passionate. So-called fans of many other genres have a “meh, whatever” attitude, and music gets relegated to background noise. Metal fans can have actual conversations about our beloved genre, as well as have a strong opinion (or three), especially this time of year. So as 2016 wraps up, it’s time to reminisce about the last 365 days of Heavy Metal! We at RAM have our own way of giving the year the once over in form of the RAMMY AWARDS. It’s basically our take on the Grammy Awards as we share our faves in key categories that mean the most to Metalheads. Namely our favorite bands, albums, tunes, live shows, news stories and our Radioactive Metal Hall Of Fame. It’s far and away our easiest episode to write and produce, but easily one our most entertaining too! Horns to 2016!!
Thrash legends SLAYER create the kind of art that can cross over into other avenues beyond the streets of Metaldom. Their controversial lyrics, imagery, and promo vids translate well to other media and the awesome Dark Horse Comics recognized that potential. Thus, “Slayer: Repentless” is born; a three part mini-series based on the promo vids of the namesake album. The man behind these pages of rage is no stranger to our beloved genre… Writer/Director Jon Schnepp was an artistic mastermind behind the Metalocalypse series, has directed videos for FORBIDDEN and EXODUS, and wrote the DETHKLOK comics. We can’t think of a more qualified man for this unique venture. Mr. Schnepp discusses how he got involved on the series, how twisted the story will be, and his music of choice while working on this platter of splatter. He also discusses his time working on cartoons for Adult Swim, but especially his days on Metalocalypse. The Avengers? Spider-Who? SLAAAAAYEEEEEER!!!!! In our News, Views, and Tunes, we bitch about the 2016 Revolver Awards and address the ISIS/PayPal controversery. Musically, we crank some Slayer, CRADLE OF FILTH, Dethklok, the returning GORATORY, and introduce Swedish beaters ARROGANT STATE in our Indie Spotlight. Horns!!
We love it when our beloved worlds collide. Apart from being big dogs in the Heavy Metal yard, we also have a geeky side. We’re always on the prowl for unique Creature Features that have a love of our beloved genre. Comic artist/writer/publisher JIM BALENT is best known for his work on Catwoman, Batman, but most of all, his self-published Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose series. He’s also a huge KISS freak. It was a no-brainer to get him on the horn. We discussed his time working on Catwoman, why he launched his own pushing company, the 100th issue of his flagship title, working with Gene Simmons, and his massive KISS fandom. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we bash t-shirt wearing posers, crack open another Coreen’s Bag O’ Crap, and crank some KISS, ICED EARTH, and CARNIVAL IN COAL. Horns Up!!
