We’ve always been one for the underdog. In terms of recognition, 80s Montreal metallers SWORD never quite got up there with some of their Canadian counterparts. But in our hearts and minds, they’ve always been up there with the best of ’em. Now on the comeback trail with a brand new live album, it’s a good time to give Sword their deserved accolades. We caught up with guitarist Mike Plant to discuss the new live CD, how tight they were on stage, and partying with Lemmy in a private club in London. Roch also shares with Mike a moment he had with the band at a club gig in 1989. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we talk about drum styx (and other stuff) to the face, HMV Canada memories and the latest in the Lambesis saga. Musically, we crank some Sword, the new VENOM PRISON and GRINDMOTHER! Horns Up!!
The mighty ARMORED SAINT have always a band that is musically hard to pin down. They have a classic metal look and sound, but they also have a broader appeal that strikes a chord with the more melodic crowd and the heavier underground fans as well. This is one of the many conundrums we’ve had for The Saint for literally decades. Now with their new live record Carpe Noctem on the racks, it’s time to seize bassist Joey Vera for a chat. We discuss said record, the band’s 2017 fan base, and the origins of the monicker. And of course, there’s some Lemmy memories!! In our News, Views, and Tunes, we discuss Ozzy’s harmonica and make a case for the pen being mightier. Finally we crank some Saint, BLACK ANVIL, some classic MORBID ANGEL, and more ANAL TRUMP!!! Horns!
We kick off our Creature Feature line up for 2017 with a dude that we, quite frankly, should have featured a long time ago. On numerous times, we’ve put over the mighty Hell’s Headbangers record label. The man simply known as Reaper has a major role within the HH headquarters. First off, as a contributing artist with his thrash band CRUCIFIED MORTALS, who just released their latest awesome album Psalms OfThe Dead Choir. Second, his Hellcast podcast does an excellent job promoting the label and its distribution artists. He’s also the guy that makes sure your HH order gets onto your stereo in record time. Mr. Reaper (or just Reap to his buddies) shares all this and also talks about his time in the mighty NUNSLAUGHTER as well as some memories of the late, great drummer Jim Konya. Normies better fear this reaper. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we pay up on our annual hockey bet with some Alter Bridge bashing. Musically, we crank the new Crucified Mortals, WEEKEND NACHOS, PRETTY MAIDS, and the critically underrated Canuck metallers SWORD. Finally we expose Chi-Town bashers ONE STEEL WOUND in our Indie Spotlight. Horns!!
Thrash legends SLAYER create the kind of art that can cross over into other avenues beyond the streets of Metaldom. Their controversial lyrics, imagery, and promo vids translate well to other media and the awesome Dark Horse Comics recognized that potential. Thus, “Slayer: Repentless” is born; a three part mini-series based on the promo vids of the namesake album. The man behind these pages of rage is no stranger to our beloved genre… Writer/Director Jon Schnepp was an artistic mastermind behind the Metalocalypse series, has directed videos for FORBIDDEN and EXODUS, and wrote the DETHKLOK comics. We can’t think of a more qualified man for this unique venture. Mr. Schnepp discusses how he got involved on the series, how twisted the story will be, and his music of choice while working on this platter of splatter. He also discusses his time working on cartoons for Adult Swim, but especially his days on Metalocalypse. The Avengers? Spider-Who? SLAAAAAYEEEEEER!!!!! In our News, Views, and Tunes, we bitch about the 2016 Revolver Awards and address the ISIS/PayPal controversery. Musically, we crank some Slayer, CRADLE OF FILTH, Dethklok, the returning GORATORY, and introduce Swedish beaters ARROGANT STATE in our Indie Spotlight. Horns!!
The legendary FLOTSAM AND JETSAM have had a banner year. A killer new album and tour has rejuvenated Metaldom’s interest in the band. The Arizona thrashers helped cap off our 2016 by returning to the RAM hot seat. Once again, we caught up with Michael Gilbert and Eric AK to discuss everything Flotz. They share a story from their latest tour in Belgium with DESTRUCTION, where their bus caught fire and where they averted physical confrontation at a convenience store with some hoodlums. We also discuss the lack of distribution of their new release and why they re-recorded No Place for Disgrace. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we take the piss out of Nickelback and Kid Rock and crank some F&J, HELSTAR, CLITERATI, DEAD WAR, and introduce Cal-aye-for-nigh-aye’s HELION PRIME in our Indie Spotlight. Horns Up!!
