Thrash legends SLAYER create the kind of art that can cross over into other avenues beyond the streets of Metaldom. Their controversial lyrics, imagery, and promo vids translate well to other media and the awesome Dark Horse Comics recognized that potential. Thus, “Slayer: Repentless” is born; a three part mini-series based on the promo vids of the namesake album. The man behind these pages of rage is no stranger to our beloved genre… Writer/Director Jon Schnepp was an artistic mastermind behind the Metalocalypse series, has directed videos for FORBIDDEN and EXODUS, and wrote the DETHKLOK comics. We can’t think of a more qualified man for this unique venture. Mr. Schnepp discusses how he got involved on the series, how twisted the story will be, and his music of choice while working on this platter of splatter. He also discusses his time working on cartoons for Adult Swim, but especially his days on Metalocalypse. The Avengers? Spider-Who? SLAAAAAYEEEEEER!!!!! In our News, Views, and Tunes, we bitch about the 2016 Revolver Awards and address the ISIS/PayPal controversery. Musically, we crank some Slayer, CRADLE OF FILTH, Dethklok, the returning GORATORY, and introduce Swedish beaters ARROGANT STATE in our Indie Spotlight. Horns!!
We love it when our beloved worlds collide. Apart from being big dogs in the Heavy Metal yard, we also have a geeky side. We’re always on the prowl for unique Creature Features that have a love of our beloved genre. Comic artist/writer/publisher JIM BALENT is best known for his work on Catwoman, Batman, but most of all, his self-published Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose series. He’s also a huge KISS freak. It was a no-brainer to get him on the horn. We discussed his time working on Catwoman, why he launched his own pushing company, the 100th issue of his flagship title, working with Gene Simmons, and his massive KISS fandom. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we bash t-shirt wearing posers, crack open another Coreen’s Bag O’ Crap, and crank some KISS, ICED EARTH, and CARNIVAL IN COAL. Horns Up!!
Greetings Boils and Ghouls! We couldn’t think of a better way to follow up our 10th anniversary milestone than by diving right into the Halloween season. In the past, we’ve gone all out, dedicating the entire month to the metallically macabre. This year, we have a lot on our docket but we still want to get into the spirit of the season. With that in mind, Season of Mist black metallers CARACH ANGREN kick off our Halloween festivities. While terrorizing the town, keyboardist Ardek spooked us with scary tales about their latest record and “horror metal”. As a bonus, we re-enter the world of Archie! Back in 2012, the gang had a Halloween crossover story with none other than the Kings Of The Night Time World themselves, KISS! We caught up with artist Dan Parent to get the back story on these back issues. We discuss how the project came about, the store signing he did with Gene and Paul, and his new Kickstarter project Die Kitty Die! Musically, we play some perilous passages straight out of the Necronomicon from BAPTISM, ICED EARTH, ERIMHA, and HENRY MANFREDINI. Horns for Halloween!
Earlier this year, our favorite comic book artist Gisele Lagace told us about her upcoming project involving ARCHIE and his gang entering the wonderful world of the RAMONES, simply titled “Archie Meets Ramones”. Of course being Ramones marks but more importantly respecting the legacy and giving us an excuse to talk about them, we got Gisele back on the horn. We discussed how the project came to be, the research involved, Dee Dee Ramone being a hottie, and why it’s important to draw guitars accurately. In our News, Views and Tunes, we use this special Spotlight episode to welcome our good bud Aaron (from the Signal To Noise podcast) to officially join the RAM Fam. We discuss our fave everythings about the band and trade special memories involving Joey and the boys. Aaron also shares a very special story about playing a gig a few weeks after Joey passed away. Hey! Ho! Let’s go! Horns Up!!
We admit it. 66.6% of us are kinda nerdy, especially when it comes to comic books. Growing up, we enjoyed one classic series called What If? The title explored what would happen if an event in the Marvel Universe never happened or something else happened in it’s place. It explored what were the ramifications of this alternate event and the story behind it. The world of Heavy Metal has had its own events that have shaped the genre’s landscape that we see today. So what if said event never happened? What if Cliff Burton never left us. What if grunge never took off. What if there was no VENOM? We have an interesting and entertaining discussion regarding our predictions of this alternate realm. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we goober a recent KORN tribute show and crank some Venom, ANVIL, SATYRICON, POWER FROM HELL and LA’s DESECRATE in our Indie Spotlight. Horns Up!!
