FLOTSAM AND JETSAM are one of those legendary underground outfits that we feel never really got their fair shake. F&J (to their friends) go back to the beginnings of the thrash scene and should be spoken in the same breath of some of their contemporaries. With the release of their kick ass new self-titled record, we decided it was time to right some wrongs. Axeman Michael Gilbert is an original member and has been the heart and soul of the outfit for the past thirty years. Getting the man on the horn, he was eager to discuss the new album, the experience of buying vinyl records, and touring with MERCYFUL FATE. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we trade war stories on the live front and discuss the Pulse nightclub tragedy. Musically we crank the new Flotsam, GRAVE DESECRATOR, CANDLEMASS, KING DIAMOND, SACRED REICH, and introduce NY metalcore HOLLOW BONES in our Indie Spotlight. Horns!!!
It was definitely a wild week with much to discuss. First up, frequent guest/good friend and Heavy Metal everyman Bob Nalbandian joined us while crusinin’ the Cali coastline. With the release of the latest installment of his INSIDE METAL docs-series (The L.A. Metal Scene Explodes), Mr. Nalbandian gave us the 411 discussing how it came to be, the years covered, and where it will available. A chat with Bob is just as entertaining and informative as his cool projects. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we get crazy yacking about rug burn at shows (!!) and super groups. Then we get heavy duty with the Grimmie/Orlando incident and its future ramifications and bigotry against Metalheads (NOTE: This was recorded a few hours BEFORE the tragedy at the Pulse nightclub). Finally we crank the new D.R.I., ARMORED SAINT, some old school live MOTLEY CRÜE, MICKEY RATT (??), and introduce Vancouver thrashers WITHOUT MERCY in our Indie Spotlight. Horns Up!!
The Drover family is no stranger to RAM. Apart from being MEGADETH fans, we had the pleasure of chatting with Glen Drover a few years back. So it stands to reason that we would one day extend the invitation to his brother Shawn. Mr. Drover pounded the skins for Megadeth for a decade. Then a couple years back, he jumped ship with axe whiz Chris Broderick and formed ACT OF DEFIANCE. Upon his arrival in town to promote their Metal Blade debut, we sat down to discuss the formation of the outfit and said record. We also picked his brain on essentially starting fresh and he shared his thoughts and memories on the recently deceased Nick Menza. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we pay tribute to Mr. Menza and butt heads with metal elitists and annoying fans. Musically we crank the AOD record, CENTINEX, MERCYLESS, DERKETA, and… NAPALM BIAFRA (??). Horns!
There’s an old adage that goes “The eyes are a window to the soul”. Around here, we feel the quickest way to view our messed up insides is through our record collection. With the rise of reality TV bullshit, new expressions are being added to Joe and Jane Average’s vernacular. In 2016 record (and DVD) collecting is seen as “hoarding”. But as musical connoisseur we see the value of the physical product, regardless of the format. This week is a good time to share the ins and outs of our music collections. With categories culled from the top Metal rags, we go over some of our favorite records, which records best represent Metal, and conversely, which records should not be. We also share our favorite party albums and which record was the first we did the old mattress mambo to. So many great memories with new ones created during every trip to the record shop. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we go through Coreen’s Crap Bag, butt heads with a Playboy Playmate and play a very Metal game of chicken. Musically, we crank some tunes from CONDITION CRITICAL, BONDED BY BLOOD, ABIGAIL and TESTAMENT. We’re also stoked to present a real cool chat with Canadian hardcore bashers MORTALITY RATE in our Extended Indie Spotlight. Whew! Horns Up!
