Episode 371: Wacken Or Bust

For Metal fans, the annual Wacken Open Air Festival is the equivalent of the World Cup or the Super Bowl. When that young Metalhead first picks up his axe, he’s got visions of standing on that very same stage. The Canadian metal scene has it’s own unique avenue of getting one of our own there. For months now, we’ve been pushing the Wacken Metal Battle, a nation wide “battle of the bands”. To the victors, go the spoils and Toronto’s VESPERIA are going to the big stage. Warming up for their time in the spotlight, the band crossed the country and we caught up with guitarists Frankie Caracci and Casey Elliot. They go through everything step by step, what they’re looking forward to, and what’s changed for the band since their victory. Representing our own region is Indie Spotlight alumni ENDLESS CHAOS, whom we gathered the entire troupe to talk about their experiences with The Battle. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we address the tragic events in the AFTER THE BURIAL and ENABLER camps. Musically we crank our interview subjects, ARMORED SAINT, EUROPE, FULGORA, HARMFUL EFFECTS and we introduce supergroup EVERY HOUR KILLS in our Indie Spotlight. Give ‘Em Hell, Dudes!! Horns!!

Episode 370: Dying To Know You

Doom/Sludge metallers LORD DYING have been on our radar for some time now. Their second Relapse full length, Poisoned Altars, is in healthy rotation at the RAM offices. In town while supporting the mighty CROWBAR, we sat down with vox/axe Erik Olson to discuss the new record and their hometown scene. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we discuss the new woes in the JOURNEY camp, the new CRADLE OF FILTH album cover, and why exactly are Metalheads more faithful to their significant others than fans of other lesser genres. Musically we crank Lord Dying, the new NUCLEAR ASSAULT, SIX FEET UNDER, MARUTA, IN DEFENCE, and introduce Florida’s EMPOROS in our Indie Spotlight. Horns Up!

Episode 369: Our Cross To Share

When the name BATTLECROSS first came onto our radar, we kind of figured we missed something back in ’84. We could hardly be blamed as the band’s monicker sounds like it’s a bullet belt deep in the NWOBHM era, or at least the North American equivalent. It was a pleasant surprise to discover that these Michigan metalheads are not only in the here-and-now, but fightin’ the good fight with our beloved Metal Blade. As the summer months are winding down, and the imminent arrival of Battlecross’ third record Rise To Power coming, the band recently stormed through town to make damn sure we knew about it. We met up with axeman Hiran Deraniyagala who talked about the new record, their old school 80s monicker and that all important third album. We quickly discovered our subject to be a wise man for his limited age. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we geek out over THE EXPLOITED and crank some wicked tunes from Battlecross, PRO-PAIN, PUTRID PILE, WARBEAST, DEW-SCENTED, MANIPULATE, and introduce New Jersey bashers ROBOTS AND MONSTERS in our Indie Spotlight. Horns Up!!

Episode 368: Feed Us A Fetus

Death metal masters ABORTED are true veterans and underground legends. Any fan that doesn’t put them right up there in the top tier with the Cannibals and Obituarys of the world need to go back and crank their latest platter The Necrotic Manifesto. With such a killer record on regular rotation in the RAM offices, we jumped at the chance to speak with Sven de Caluwé during their recent stop in Winnipeg. We got into said record, their “Heatseeker” position, their controversial monicker, and their love of pro wrasslin’. In our News, Views and Tunes, we discuss cheap beer, selfie sticks, and figure out which classic Metal band we’d each be. We compliment all this with some killer tunes from Aborted, REVOCATION, HIGH ON FIRE, and introduce Calgary’s FALSE FLAG in our Indie Spotlight. Horns!!
