Episode 351: Bloody Good Band

Side projects or supergroups can have a limited shelf life. But when the “right time, right place” combination of artists strikes a chord with fans, the project can burn quite brightly. More often than not, the flames extinguish quickly as the main band demands start monopolizing time and energy. Sweden’s BLOODBATH remain the exception to the rule. Despite being a side project, the band remains revered and respected in the death metal scene. So much to the point that one is hard pressed to remember that Bloodbath is indeed a project on the side. We recently sat down with Nick Holmes to discuss how he became the new vocalist, how the band has maintained its high quality musical output, and if there’s any crossover audience between Bloodbath and PARADISE LOST. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we give mad props to Barney Greenway, go off on the Grammys, and introduce (un)black metallers THE AUTUMN LEAGUE in our Indie Spotlight. Horns!!

Episode 350: Album Autopsy – Exciter’s Long Live The Loud 30th Anniversary

We first stepped onto the mean streets of Metaldom some thirty years ago. One of our first discoveries that captured our attention was our fellow Canadian countrymen EXCITER. So when we started this Album Autopsy series, dissecting one of Exciter’s early classic platters was a no-brainer. So in this second installment,  we take a look at the band’s 3rd release, Long Live The Loud. We are totally stoked that guitarist/founding member John Ricci dedicated an entire evening of his busy schedule to give us a complete rundown about the creation of this classic album. Mr. Ricci shares stories about songwriting, working in the studio, playing through a guitar legend’s amp and he also gives us tons of minutiae in a track-by-track rundown. He also shares a story about drinking with Lemmy in Montreal. The album may be 30 years old but the sentiment behind it is ageless. Long Live the Loud indeed! Horns Up!

Episode 349: Valentine’s Day Massacre 2015

Valhalla only knows we like to do things a tad differently around here. It’s Valentine’s Day, and every year we commemorate this special day of love with our own unique tribute. We get into the spirit of the occasion with some anti-romance music and sentiment to harden the heart of even the most dedicated romantic. Musically, we crank some of the most (in)appropriate artists ranging from the current to the classic including NUNSLAUGHTER, M.O.D., BODY COUNT, THE GREAT KAT, THE DONNAS, SEX PRISONER, FORGOTTEN REBELS, DEATH SENTENCE, CEMETERY LUST, NECROFUCKFILIA, and DRIVEBY BUKKAKE!! Fortunately, rock n’ roll has a tendency of becoming a cesspool of sex and drugs. Sometimes the stories become stuff of myths and legends. We share our takes on mudsharks, ribs, and Mars bars. Horns up and be sure to listen with that special someone!

Episode 348: Burning Up The New School

It came to our attention recently that so far in the New Year, we’ve been focusing heavily on the old school of Heavy Metal. We pride ourselves on having the knowledge and wherewithal to be able to cover all genres and aspects of aggressive music. So with our younger Beautiful MFers in mind, we’re settin ’em up with something cool. Whatevercore upstarts UPON A BURNING BODY have been a fave around here since their debut record. The band, led by growler Danny Leal, are total workhorses always on the road occupying some primo support slots and gigs. When one such tour recently flew through town, we sat down with Mr. Leal. We got to the bottom of their gangster image, the meaning behind their monicker, their experiences on Mayhem/Warped and working with none other than ICE-T. Such a nice young man despite a seemingly love of charred corpses. In our News, Views, and Tunes, we mourn the loss of Katherine Ludwig but celebrate the recent barroom antics of Geezer Butler. Musically, we crank some UABB, the new VENOM, DISCOURSE, GRISTNAM, and introduce Florida doomsters NORTHERN CROWN in our Indie Spotlight. Horns Up!!
